What is meningococcal disease?
Meningococcal infection is a disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis, mainly caused by six serogroups, including A, B, C, W, X, Y. Among them, type B accounts for 50% of the incidence (1), of which infants (less than five years old) have the highest prevalence (2), and parents should not neglect it. The disease is mainly spread through direct contact with a patient's respiratory secretions and can lead to brain damage and even death. Vaccination is an effective way to prevent meningococcal infection.
Why is vaccination recommended?
-
High mortality and sequelae: 10-15% mortality rate; 20% of survivors suffer severe complications (amputation, deafness, brain damage, intellectual disability).
-
Rapid deterioration: Initial symptoms are just fever and rash, but can lead to shock within hours; antibiotic treatment is often delayed.
-
Highly contagious: Spreads through droplets/close contact; outbreaks common in dormitories/schools.
