What is rotavirus?
- Rotavirus is a highly contagious wheel-shaped virus that appears wheel-like under an electron microscope and is the leading cause of severe gastroenteritis in infants and young children worldwide.
- It primarily affects children aged 6-24 months, most common in cooler seasons, causing acute high fever, vomiting, watery diarrhea, and abdominal pain, typically lasting 3-7 days and often leading to severe dehydration requiring hospitalization.
- Nearly all children under 5 years old worldwide get infected at least once, with over 90% of cases from Group A strains.
Why vaccinate?
There is no specific antiviral treatment for rotavirus infection—focus is on hydration—but oral vaccines like Rotarix (one dose each at 2 and 4 months) provide 85-98% efficacy in preventing severe cases.
