Varicella is an acute infectious disease that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is a highly contagious herpes virus which is transmitted via direct contact with the varicella or inhalation of aerosolized droplets from respiratory tract secretions. Apart from fever, itchy rash will also appear. The skin rash will turn into vesicles, and if those vesicles are scratched, permanent scars may be formed. The disease may be complicated by pneumonia, encephalitis, or even fatal in severe cases, especially among immunocompromised persons.
