The World Health Organization strongly recommends vaccination against Japanese encephalitis to prevent infection¹.
Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito-borne disease primarily endemic in rural and suburban areas of Asia and the Western Pacific. Most infected individuals exhibit no obvious symptoms or only mild symptoms such as fever and headache. In severe cases, symptoms can develop rapidly, including headache, high fever, neck stiffness, altered mental status, coma, seizures (especially in children), and spastic paralysis, potentially leading to death¹, with a mortality rate as high as 30%. Among those who recover, 20% to 30% may experience permanent cognitive, behavioral, or neurological issues, such as paralysis, recurrent seizures, or loss of speech².
According to the Department of Health, there is no specific treatment for Japanese encephalitis. Doctors typically provide supportive care to patients. Therefore, vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is a safe and effective preventive measure. Travelers staying in endemic areas for more than a month and short-term travelers who engage in outdoor activities in rural areas during the transmission season should also be vaccinated².

- Individuals with allergic reactions to any vaccine ingredients are not suitable for injection.
- If you have a fever or are currently taking antibiotics on the day of vaccination, it is recommended to postpone the injection.
- Individuals undergoing medical treatments (such as chemotherapy, steroids, etc.) should consult a doctor for guidance before receiving the vaccine.
- If you are taking medication but are unsure whether you can receive the vaccine, it is advised to consult a doctor first or bring your medication for the medical staff to check on the day of injection before deciding suitability.
- This plan requires an assessment by medical personnel to determine suitability. If evaluated as unsuitable for vaccination, an assessment fee of HKD 350 will apply, and the remaining balance can be refunded or exchanged.
