Hong Kong is the first region in Asia to offer respiratory syncytial virus vaccine
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common and contagious respiratory virus. Infants, individuals aged 60 or above, and those with underlying conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic heart failure are at a higher risk of severe RSV infection, which can lead to lung disease and even death.
Vaccination is also recommended for individuals aged 18-59 who are at higher risk of RSV disease, to prevent lower respiratory tract diseases caused by the RSV virus.
It is the only RSV vaccine available for both individuals aged 60 and older and pregnant women (to protect the baby). After vaccination, antibodies against the virus are transferred to the fetus through the placenta, and data indicate that the vaccine can protect the baby for the first six months after birth.
