What is Bone Density Scan (DEXA/DXA)?

  • The most common method for measuring bone mineral density today.
  • Uses two different energy levels of X-rays to analyze bone density in the lumbar spine and hip.
  • Detects bone loss within the body.

Radiation and Safety

  • Radiation dose is very low — about one-tenth of a chest X-ray.
  • Safe, quick, and painless process.
  • Examination takes about 10 minutes.

Osteoporosis Characteristics

  • Known as the "silent disease," often discovered only after fractures occur.
  • Post-menopausal women experience significant bone density decline due to reduced estrogen.
  • Women face 4 times higher risk than men of the same age.

Bone Physiology and Risks

  • Bones are living cells that continuously rebuild new bone to replace old.
  • In osteoporosis patients, bone breakdown outpaces rebuilding, making bones fragile.
  • Minor impacts or falls can cause fractures; hip fractures have the highest mortality rate among fragility fractures in Hong Kong.

If you have the following high-risk factors, it is recommended to undergo regular bone mineral density testing to prevent fractures:

• Family history of osteoporosis

• Low physical activity levels

• Underweight

• Malnutrition

• Alcohol consumption and smoking

• Taking medications for the treatment of asthma, breast cancer, and prostate cancer
